Once known as the country’s “Second City,” Chicago, with 2.7 million citizens, is actually the third most populous city, after New York and Los Angeles. The first European visitors were 17th Century French fur traders, missionaries, and explorers, including Robert de LaSalle, who called it “Checagou” after the Native American name for a local plant. With its prime location between the Great Lakes and Mississippi River, the city, incorporated in 1837, quickly becoming a national railroad hub known for its steel mills, factories and stockyards. This County Seat of Cook County attracted a diverse ethnic base, from around the world, all of which which helped develop the city’s unique cultural style. The many and varied neighborhoods provide city residents with a close-knit, communal feel in the heart of the city, while the expanding suburbs boosted the population of the extended area known as Chicagoland past 10 million. O’Hare International Airport, the fourth busiest in the world, makes Chicago is a national hub.

Thanks in part to the 1871 fire that all but destroyed the central city, Chicago’s architecture became known for its modern and eclectic style in works created by famous modern architects such as Frank Lloyd Wright, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Frank Gehry. Remnants of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition include the world-famous Museum of Science and Industry, with nearby attractions including the Field Museum of Natural History, Adler Planetarium, and the Shedd Aquarium. Other popular tourist attractions include Buckingham Fountain in Grant Park, and the 3,300-foot Navy Pier. Millennium Park is a spectacular 24.5-acre public area between Lake Michigan and Michigan Avenue, and is the site of modern sculptures such as Cloud Gate, affectionately known as “the Bean,” and the Crown Fountain, an interactive video and water sculpture. There, the architecturally stunning Jay Pritzker Pavilion provides concerts of all types throughout the warm weather. Chicago has always shown a commitment to public art, and throughout the city walkers can find works by the likes of Picasso, Chagall, and Miró.

Educational institutions abound in Chicago, including the University of Chicago, Columbia College, Roosevelt, DePaul and Loyola Universities, University of Illinois at Chicago, and the Northwestern University Chicago Campus. The seven-system City Colleges of Chicago offer educational opportunities for residents as well.

When it comes to theater, Chicago is right up there with Broadway, and in fact has become a source of new shows that try out before heading for Broadway. Nationally-known venues such as the Goodman, Steppenwolf, Lookingglass, Teatro Vista, Writers Theatre, and Chicago Shakespeare, provide top equity entertainment, and the city supports more than 200 smaller theater companies that offer a variety of traditional and experimental theater. Music and dance lovers can enjoy the world-famous Chicago Symphony, Joffrey Ballet, and Lyric Opera, as well as many other music and dance companies. And of course there’s the famous “Second City” improvisational group, home of many Saturday Night Light alumni.

Sports buffs will find plenty of action in Chicago, perhaps the best-known being the Chicago Cubs playing at iconic Wrigley Field, the Sox at U.S. Cellular Field, the Bears at Soldier Field, and the Bulls and Blackhawks at the United Center. The city also supports the Chicago Fire Soccer team, which plays at the South Side’s Toyota Park.

And of course, Chicago is well-known for high-end shopping downtown and along Michigan Avenue, as well as for its amazing, multi-cultural cuisine. But whatever you do in Chicago, you’ll always find a little pioneer spirit mixed in—a can-do attitude that rejects complacency and always looks for what’s next and new.
