The initial inhabitants of Niles were the Potawatomi Indians in the 1700’s. The first settlers of Niles arrived in 1827 and were mostly German. In 1870, Niles had a population of only about 200 people. Niles was officially incorporated in 1899 with a man named John Huntington elected as the first mayor. In 1932, a recreational park with swimming pools, cabanas, and a half size replica of the leaning tower of Pisa was built, which is iconic today.
The expansion of Niles began with the annexing of unincorporated area, which became what is known today as the Golf Mill Shopping Center. This along with the newly built village administration building, Fitness and Senior Center, enlargement of the library, and more greatly aided in the expansion of the village as well as greatly increasing the population.
Residents of Niles have the opportunity to attend Maine East, Main South, Niles North, and Niles West High Schools. In 2009, Maine East was ranked #1192 public school in the U.S. in 2009 and #1181 in 2006. Maine South was ranked 9th by the Chicago Tribune among public non-magnet high schools in Illinois.
