About Palatine, IL

Palatine is a village located in Cook County and is recognized as a northwest suburb of Chicago. The village is only 30 miles from Chicago’s Loop and 14 miles from O’Hare International Airport. With a population of close to 70,000 residents, Palatine is known as the seventh largest community in Cook County and the 18th largest in Illinois. Palatine is an affluent area, with a median family income of close to $75,000 per year. With a motto like, “A Real Home Town”, Palatine is definitely a safe and welcoming place to live and raise a family.

Following the Black Hawk War in 1832, settlers from New York and New England traveled to Palatine and made it into their home. 1835 marks the year when George Ela, the man credited with building the first home in the area, moved into Palatine. In the mid 1850’s several railroad stations were built and became known as the Chicago and Northwestern railroad. The constructions of railroads increased the growth of the area in terms of population and economically. In 1855, after the railroads were built, a man named Joel Wood made the plan for Palatine. The village was incorporated in 1866. The residents of Palatine love to learn about the history of their village and have the opportunity to do so at the George Clayson House, which was built in the 1870’s and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The house contains many artifacts from Palatine’s history and is a great place to visit.

The population of Palatine continued to grow from the time of its incorporation for over the next 100 years. A major population boom occurred in the 1960’s and 1970’s, when the population grew from 11,500 all the way to almost 30,000 people in 1973. As the census from 2010 reports, the population has more than doubled since 1973 with close to 70,000 people living in the area.

Today, Palatine is a thriving and wonderful place to live. There is an excellent public education system, which affords the residents the opportunity to attend either Palatine or William Fremd High School. Palatine High School has received the Department of Education Blue Ribbon Award twice. The first time winning the award was for the 1992-1993 school year and then again for the 1999-2000 school year. Also, Newsweek ranked Palatine in the top 1,300 high schools in America in 2005, 2007, and 2008. William Fremd has also been recognized for academic excellence by the United States Department of Education by naming Fremd as among the top schools in the nation. U.S. News & World Report also named William Fremd to the list of 99 outstanding high schools in the United States. With such great educational opportunities, Palatine is definitely a fantastic place to live in terms of education.

Although Palatine is a very large village with a large population, it definitely lives up to its motto, “A Real Home Town”, because of how much fun the area is and how comforting it is to its residents. There is always something to do from shopping to seeing historical sights and so much more. There is no doubt that Palatine is a great place to live as well as visit!
