Skokie is a village located in Cook County and is recognized as a Chicago suburb. With a population of close to 65,000 residents, Skokie is a very large village. Evanston to the east, Morton Grove to the West, Lincolnwood to the South, and Wilmette to the North surround the village. Skokie is close to convenient locations being only 16 miles Northwest of Chicago and 12 miles east of O’Hare International Airport.
Initially, the area currently known as Skokie was incorporated as Niles Centre in 1888 before the spelling was changed to Niles Center in 1910. This name was creating confusion and problems for the postal service with deliveries to Niles and Niles Center, which lead to a renaming campaign in 1940 where the residents chose between the names “Skokie” and “Devonshire”. Skokie did not really begin to expand greatly until the 1940’s and 1950’s after the Great Crash of 1929 and the Great Depression. From then on, the population steadily increased as new businesses and residents moved into the area.
Currently, Skokie is a thriving community with so much to offer its residents. Recently, Skokie was the recipient of the National “Gold Medal of Excellence” in parks and recreation management. Some of the current day attractions of Skokie include the Skokie Festival of Cultures, which aims to celebrate the village’s diverse composition. The other main attraction is the Westfield Old Orchard Mall. This mall is very upscale an contains many stores and restaurants including: Bloomingdale’s, Lord and Taylor, Macy’s, Epic Burger, Uncle Julio’s, Roka Akor, and so much more.
The residents of Skokie really love living in this area because of all of the great opportunities afforded to its inhabitants. Money magazine recognized Skokie as one of the 80 fastest growing suburbs in the country. Skokie was also acknowledged by Chicago magazine, which consistently ranks Skokie near to top of its community livability rating. Based on all of the attractions offered to the residents and visitors as well as the spectacular public education system, it is obvious that Skokie is a wonderful place to call home.
