About
About Highland Park, IL
As one of Chicago’s affluent northern suburbs, the City of Highland Park (population just under 30,000) is known for being home to an upscale population with a gracious lifestyle. Located just 25 commutable miles north of Chicago, Highland Park is bordered on the north by Lake Forest and he small communities of Highwood and Fort Sheridan, with Glencoe and Northbrook to the south and Deerfield and Bannockburn to the west. The breathtaking eastern border is almost entirely along Lake Michigan—nearly ten percent of the entire Illinois shoreline.
While much of the coastline is lined with impressive, privately owned waterfront homes, there are also many accessible areas—notably the public beaches managed by the Park District. Though Moraine, Millard and Park Avenue beaches do not allow swimming, they have their own charms: Moraine offers an off-leash dog beach, while Millard provides educational opportunities with its Lake Michigan Rock Garden. Boats can be launched from Park Avenue Beach, which is home to the North Shore Yacht Club. The largest beach is Rosewood, where swimmers are welcome and will also find a wide variety of beach activities as well as an interpretive nature center.
But the Highland Park Parks Department provides more than just beach fun. Other offerings include the Recreation Center of Highland Park, where residents can enjoy fitness and aquatic facilities and programs, and the West Ridge Center, which focuses on fine and performing arts. Other facilities include the Centennial Ice Arena, Heller Nature Center, Deer Creek Racquet Club, Hidden Creek Aquatic Park, and Highland Park Country Club.
With its wide, tree-lined streets and large, well-kept homes, Highland Park presents the image of a perfect family community. This idyllic atmosphere has led to Highland Park becoming popular with filmmakers and TV producers as the perfect setting for their projects. The city has been lending itself to moviemakers since the 1980’s, when it provided the backdrop for parts of the classic films Ordinary People, Risky Busines, Sixteen Candles, and Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, among others. Most recently, the suburb was the setting for the suburban “home” on the TV show The Good Wife.
Despite its Hollywood connections, Highland Park is probably best-known as the home of the 3,400-seat Ravinia Festival, the nation’s oldest outdoor music festival, which each summer presents the Chicago Symphony as well as big-name entertainment of every form. The eclectic list of past headliners includes Janis Joplin and the Full Tilt Boogie Band, Tony Bennett, Yo-Yo Ma, and live tapings of the radio show, A Prairie Home Companion. There under the stars, thousands cluster beneath the pavilion or enjoy picnics on the lawn as they relax and enjoy the sounds of a summer night.
Highland Park is more than just entertaining. It’s a village committed to the welfare of its residents, and is proud of its excellent schools, including Silver Medal School Highland Park High, ranked 17th in Illinois and 548th in the nation. It is also home to the highly-regarded Highland Park Hospital, winner of several Healthgrades quality awards.
So pick your activity, arrange your day, and enjoy a visit to Highland Park, ending at one of the excellent dining venues downtown. It’s the perfect end to a day in this picture-perfect place.
