About
About Mundelein, IL
Located in Central Lake County just 35 miles north of downtown Chicago, the Village of Mundelein has seen many changes in both name and character. Called at various times “Mechanics Grove,” “Holcomb,” “Rockefeller” and “Area,” it took its final name in 1921, when the University of St. Mary’s of the Lake was established there by Chicago’s archbishop and future cardinal, George Mundelein. The seminary is still in operation, its magnificent grounds open for public viewing.
Mundelein, population nearly 32,000, is proud to be home to one of the most diverse populations in the northern suburbs. Understanding and tolerance are key elements in the Village, and its diversity is formally celebrated each September with the One World Festival. In addition, the Village, Park District, Community Connection, Fremont Public Library, and local schools often work together to develop and present informational and celebratory programs and events throughout the year. A variety of public entertainment events and activities include an annual juried arts festival, weekly farmers market and outdoor concerts, monthly car shows, a Craft Beer Festival, the winter Tree Lighting Ceremony, and Santa’s Cottage. Mundelein Community Days brighten the Fourth of July, and throughout the year, the Fort Hill Heritage Museum is open each Saturday, featuring different historical exhibits and even a railroad car from the early days. The local performance group, the Kirk Players, recently celebrated their 50th anniversary of theater productions, classes and scholarships.
As the Village strives to establish itself as a modern, vital community, it is developing an ambitious growth plan welcoming new businesses and buildings. The downtown revitalization project provides incentives for business growth, but is also emphasizing the arts, with local creativity being encouraged and incorporated into the planned downtown renovations, which includes a large-scale performance venue that will benefit all of Lake County.
The Mundelein Park and Recreation District manages the 33 neighborhood parks scattered throughout the Village, as well as a popular Senior Center and a modern recreation center complete with exercise facilities and an indoor lap pool, and outdoor water parks for all ages. The Park District also sponsors varied programs for health, fitness, and the arts, including music lessons and a dance program, and manages local bike and walking paths as well as the community beach at Diamond Lake. Popular outdoor seasonal events include the annual spring Egg Quest, summer Cardboard Regatta, autumn Pumpkin Drop, and winter sledding fun on the Village’s biggest hill.
Education is a priority in Mundelein, as evidenced by Mundelein High School’s cutting-edge STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) center. Both MHS and Carmel Catholic offer high-quality drama and music programs, sharing performances with the community, and local middle and elementary schools boast innovative, cross-cultural curricula.
In short, Mundelein is a village on the move, leaping large and landing feet first in the future while maintaining a warm, down-to-earth community that welcomes all.
