About Gurnee, IL

Gurnee is a village located in Lake County about 50 miles from both Chicago and Milwaukee. It is conveniently split by Interstate 90 making access to the cities incredibly easy. Even though it is so close to both major cities, it is considered to be part of the Chicago metropolitan area. As of 2010, the population of Gurnee was about 31,000, an 8.5% increase since 2000, with a median household income of $85,421. The first settlers in Gurnee arrived in the early 1800s. Not long after, a permanent bridge was built which led to more roads being established making Gurnee a great place to call home. Originally, the village was named Wentworth after a congressman at the time. It would later be renamed after Chicago mayor, Walter Gurnee, when he agreed to build a railroad station in Wentworth.

In 1991, a major attraction to Gurnee opened- Gurnee Mills, the third largest shopping mall in Illinois. In 2007, the mall acquired new ownership when the Mills Corporation was bought out by the Simon Property Group. Each year more than 20 million people visit Gurnee Mills making it one of the largest attractions to the village.
Another attraction that brings people to Gurnee Mills is Six Flags Great America. Originally owned and opened my Marriott in 1976, Six Flags purchased the park in 1984. The 3 million people that visit each year can enjoy 10 different themed sections including a water section, 3 different childrens sections, and the rest being various kinds of entertainment. This Six Flags is ranked 5th in the world for amount of roller coasters at a theme park.

With all that Gurnee has to offer, it is without a doubt a great place to live or even just visit. With the accessibility to Chicago and Milwaukee, it is a prime location for commuters and those that love both cities.
