Kitchen Remodel in Arlington Heights
Long and narrow, Arlington Heights, Illinois benefits from its proximity to major roadways, making it very commutable to downtown Chicago, just 25 miles to its south. The village is traversed by Highways 12, (Rand Road) 14 (Northwest Highway), 58 (and 62 (Algonquin Road), and is bordered by Highway 53 on the west and Interstate 90 (The Jane Addams Tollway), along its southern border. With a population of more than 75,000, Arlington Heights has the distinction of being the largest incorporated village in the U.S. Incorporated in 1887, Arlington Heights is one of the older Chicago suburbs and maintains much of its elegant old architecture and family-friendly atmosphere, including excellent schools and many beautiful parks. Proud of its historical background, the village has worked to maintain that established community feel, even as it works to redevelop its downtown into a vibrant, modern place complete with great shopping and diverse roster of dining venues. Entertainment possibilities include exciting live theater at the Metropolis Performing Arts Center, and racing fun at the world-famous Arlington Park Racetrack.
The Job
Besides being outdated, the small L-shaped kitchen was hampered by short walls, giving it limited storage and even less counter space. By removing the back wall and moving the kitchen into the previous dining space, the work areas could be expanded and a more useful environment created. Tall Regency maple cabinets in espresso were added, complete with elegant crown molding at the tops. The flooring in both kitchen and adjoining new dining space was replaced with Rado hardwood, and to prevent the room from looking too dark, Daltile Granite in Shivling White was selected for the counters, creating a beautiful contrast. The pièce de résistance was the inclusion of a large, extra long kitchen island that allows for family seating and even space for a built-in microwave oven. For even more eye appeal, a backsplash of Daltile Diamont Delta in random linear Crystal Shores was set above the wall counters, echoing the granite’s tones of gray and white and emphasized by the Laticrete White Snow grout. A stainless steel patterned backsplash accent above the stove now adds texture and highlights the stunning contemporary range hood with a welcome contemporary touch.
While the old kitchen included a passthrough window above the sink, the new arrangement reversed the placement of sink and stove, so a new pass through had to be created above the new undermount stainless steel farmhouse sink. Complete with Shivling granite sill, the pass through visually connects to the new dining area and opens up the space. The old dining room windows were replaced by Regency custom sliders that open up to the back yard, allowing for the elimination of the old back door. For an extra touch, a whimsical dog door was created for pet convenience. Finally, ceiling can lights and under cabinet lighting now create the proper lighting for both food prep and general illumination.
Project Summary
The homeowners now have plenty of work space in their roomy, updated kitchen. Now there’s plenty of work area for multiple cooks, and the oversized island is a great gathering place, allowing for easy entertaining as well as family meals.
