The kitchen was cramped and awkward, with limited cabinet storage and counter space. Lighting was limited to one ceiling fixture, and the sink was almost hidden beneath a cabinet. The entire effect was dark and cave-like. The owner wanted to rework the entire floor plan of the old-fashioned kitchen, opening it up to the family room to create a more modern and efficient open-concept living space.

Project Summary

In order to open up the kitchen to the family room, an entirely new floor plan had be devised. The dividing wall between kitchen and family room had to be removed, requiring the installation of a new support beam, which created a charming architectural element. The walls had to be taken down to the studs and the soffits removed, allowing for the installation of full-height Regency cabinets in white maple, accented with crown molding and trendy brushed nickel hardware. The new layout was based on a wide galley style with a center island, allowing for a more efficient arrangement of the high-end stainless appliances, including a contemporary range hood. To add to cooking efficiency, a microwave oven was built into the island. To bridge the space between kitchen and family room while creating more work area, a wide peninsula was added to provide seating for casual family meals. Counters in Daltile white quartz created an abundance of prep space, and the sophisticated white theme was continued in the backsplash, Daltile’s Rittenhouse 3 x 6 subway tile with Laticrete grout in Snow. A stunning Kohler Whitehaven farmhouse sink adds to the room’s casual warmth, and to avoid a sterile feeling from so much white, warm wood elements were added in the island butcher block top, Regency hardwood floors, and trendy open shelving above the sink. Large glass globe pendant lights add warmth above the peninsula, while recessed can lights brighten every work area.

The final kitchen creates the friendly family environment the homeowner wanted, coupled with an urbane sophistication that bespeaks of today.
