About Wilmette, IL

Sharing the Lake Michigan shoreline with Kenilworth to its north and Evanston to its south, Wilmette enjoys its reputation as one of Chicago’s most affluent northern suburbs. Its location just 14 miles north of Downtown Chicago means it is a desirable location for commuters, with easy access by major arterials Green Bay Road, Skokie Boulevard, and I-94, and the Village also enjoys train service by both Metra and the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA). As a “bedroom community,” Wilmette offers a host of programs and activities for its residents, many provided by the busy Park District, which operates ice rinks, a center for the arts, a community recreation center, aquatic center, fitness club, and a large number of parks. The public library system also offers a comprehensive schedule of programs and activities for children and adults. The focus on education is strong, and Wilmette is home to the award-winning New Trier High School, along with several highly-regarded parochial schools. No wonder Wilmette is consistently found on many surveys and lists as one of the best places to live in Illinois.

The Subject Property

This kitchen suffered from a lack of workspace, as well as outdated appliances and cabinetry. The homeowners wished to update the look while incorporating additional counters and more storage. The room was gutted, and the back door moved to allow for more surface area. In addition, the passway to the rest of the house was opened up, providing an easy flow into the new kitchen. The old-fashioned soffits were removed and white Regency maple cabinets set to the ceiling, which not only provided a lot more storage space, but also created the illusion of a higher ceiling and more space. The counters selected were Daltile granite in Giallo Ornamental, a medium gray tone that offered contrast without interfering with the overall white effect. The gray counters were then enhanced with a white backsplash of Dalile Rittenhouse 3 x 6 tiles set in a subway pattern and matched to Laticrete Crème grout for an unbroken color flow. The old porcelain set-in sink was replaced by a sleek Kohler Riverby undermount sink and Hansgrohe Talis chrome faucet, and accessorized with a Grohe Spao soap dispenser. The addition of sleek new stainless steel appliances included a built-in microwave oven, replacing the old appliance that sat taking up counter space. Well-placed can lights illuminate the new space and offer excellent general and task lighting, making this sleek new kitchen a joy to look at and cook in.

End Result

The homeowners were extremely pleased with the way the new kitchen provides so much more storage and counter space. They loved the way the room now opens up to the rest of the house. Just because a home is older doesn’t mean it can’t function well and provide an updated, modern look, as evidenced by this beautiful, modern update.
