Vernon Hills was incorporated in 1958 after the outgrowth of a 125-house subdivision built in the area presently known as Vernon Hills, which was home to 123 residents. From incorporation, Vernon Hills experienced consistent, rapid growth and by 1980, the population had reached about 10,000 residents. Vernon Hills continued to grow in size as well as population as the community annexed surrounding areas, which would become Corporate Woods and Centennial Crossing. In 2000, the village acquired the Nike Missile Base, which had been owned and operated by the U.S. Army and the U.S. Navy. The land was converted into what is now known as the Vernon Hills Athletic Complex.

Today, Vernon Hills serves as the retail hub for the surrounding areas including but not limited to: Buffalo Grove, Mundelein, Libertyville, Long Grove, Riverwoods, and more.
